I often go on kicks of different types of books that I want to read. Last summer I plowed through the Stephanie Plum series pretty quickly and went on to read a few other series in the Fall. One of my goals this year is to knock down my list of books that I’ve bought when they were free or on discount on Kindle. The last few weeks I’ve been “detoxing my mind” after reading The Maze Runner series. This has been the perfect time to knock through some of those cheesy romance novels that you can predict from the moment you read them but you just can’t stop reading them. Bluegrass State of Mind was PERFECT for this and actually kept things a little bit interesting as you watched the full story unfold.
Kenna came to a small Kentucky town with secrets. In a town that doesn’t do secrets, they were bound to come out…somehow!
Bluegrass State of Mind Synopsis
She thought she would be safe far away in Kentucky…
McKenna Mason’s perfect life in New York City has just been destroyed. She is now a witness to a horrific crime involving some of America’s most influential men. She knows she must escape and can think of only one outsider that might help her—Will Ashton. The flame of their brief teen romance never completely died out, and now it is about to explode.
Troubled pasts, a feisty horse that refuses to race without a good luck kiss, and three old ladies hell-bent on playing matchmakers turn this newly rekindled romance into a wild race to the finish. Can Will and McKenna cross the finish line together, and more importantly, alive?
My Thoughts on Bluegrass State of Mind
I am all for a good cheesy novel. I won’t lie, they suck me in more often than not. McKenna (also known as Kenna) had a secret to tell but Kathleen Brooks made readers keep reading for awhile before revealing the truth. I won’t lie, this was at first the main reason I kept reading. I wanted to know what McKenna was running from.
As Bluegrass State of Mind went on and Will and McKenna started to figure out their relationship, I kind of fell in love with the small Kentucky town. I loved how fast the gossip spread, the fact that everyone ate at the same cafe and how pretty much everyone had Kenna’s back from the moment she walked in. The sisters were hilarious and I think easily my favorite characters.
While most “romance novels” can be fairly predictable, I love the different twists and turns Bluegrass State of Mind took. It wasn’t straightforward and while a lot of it was predictable there was enough to the different plot lines going on to keep you going. One thing I did like about the book is that it was “romance” without the “way too detailed romance” if you get what I’m saying.
It was a wonderful quick read and I would recommend it if you’re looking for a few twists and turns but nothing too complicated that it makes your brain hurt. When I started reading Bluegrass State of Mind I had no idea that there was an entire Bluegrass series. As I’ve finished it up now I realized there are another 5 books and a half book in the series! I’ve added the small Kentucky town to my “To Read” list now! First I need to get through a few other books though!

I’m a total sucker for quick read, relaxing romances like this – especially when there is a little suspense and a lot of tension too. Have to check this one out! – Katy
