While I’m all about vegetables and fruit for snacks, I’ve found that everyone else isn’t always on board with my choice of a healthy snack. When it comes to the little man I’ve been trying to find some fun ways to make healthier snacks interesting for him. Just because they are for kids, doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy them too.
I’m far from the “pinterest mommy” that many others strive to be, but we have a few simple go to healthy snacks that we have tried recently.
Ants on a Log
As a kid I remember making ants on a log on more than one occasion. As an adult, it has been a fun way to try and trick the little man into eating celery. So far it hasn’t completely worked but he has had a blast making them. In the end I wind up with the celery while he eats the peanut butter and raisins off the top.
- Cut up celery into 3-4″ pieces.
- Fill in celery with creamy peanut butter (we like JIF Natural but any kind works).
- Top with raisins (ants).
Banana Peanut Butter Sandwiches
This can get a little messy but is often a great way to sneak a little protein in with a favorite fruit. For a long time little man would eat nothing but bananas. More recently he’s fallen in love with blueberries, raspberries, apples & strawberries. Rarely will he finish an entire banana these days (but trust me he’ll eat a quart of blueberries any time) so we made a little fun snack out of one of his other favorites, peanut butter.
- Cut bananas into little pieces.
- Set half of the bananas to the side.
- Top half of the bananas with peanut butter.
- Add the bananas set aside on top of the peanut butter
Smoothies
Out of all of our favorite snacks it is safe to say that smoothies are at the top of our list. Each morning little man comes running downstairs to help make our breakfast smoothies. Each of us head off to work/daycare with a smoothie in hand. While there are so many different combinations of smoothies my favorite is a simple green smoothie.
With our smoothies we all manage to get in a serving of protein, fruit & vegetables while enjoying something simliar to ice cream.
What are your favorite snacks?
My kids are big snackers. We love smoothies. Recently my son started loving nuts and trail mix which I’m happy to give him.
